We’re heading into autumn down here, and Arty’s showing some interest in learning about the cycle of the seasons. I thought this activity would help him learn the difference between them and remember the sequence they progress in.

Four seasons tree painting activity (with free printable)
What you’ll need:
- Pink, red, orange, yellow, and green paint.
- A handful of cotton buds (q-tips)
- Mama Finch four seasons tree printable.

What to do:
- Use the cotton buds to apply pink spotty flowers to the ‘spring’ tree.
- Move on to the ‘summer’ tree, making green leaves instead of pink flowers.
- On the ‘autumn’ tree make red, orange and yellow leaves, then on the ‘winter’ tree, paint them around the base.
- As you adorn each tree, talk about the seasons, and they cycle of the year. What do the seasons look like, smell like, sound like?

When you’re finished, hang your child’s artwork up on the fridge, or somewhere else central in your home. You’ll show them that you’re proud of their work, and have lots of opportunities to talk about the the activity and consolidate the things they learned while doing it.
What your kid’s doing:
- Learning about the cycle of the year
- Hand eye coordination
- Fine motor skills
- Developing creativity using colour, and space
Arty hadn’t had enough crafting when we finished this activity, so I printed the trees out one-to-a-page, got out some sparkly leaves and sequins, and we did the same activity but with glueing.

Our trees were so shiny and twinkly!

Here’s a PDF of the trees so you can print them one-to-a-page.
We might try this again with coloured pom poms, or crepe paper. Now that they’re in handy PDF form, I can print them out as much as he likes. Yay!
(p.s. here’s a post about some spotty painting Arty and I did when he was 1)
