Art with kids is always fun, but developing a vocabulary to talk about different artistic elements makes it a deeper, and more interesting experience.
This simple colour pasting activity is designed to help with that.
Warm & cool colour pasting
What you’ll need:
- Mama Finch warm and cool colours printable.
- Pieces of coloured paper in red, orange, yellow, blue and green. I pre-cut these for arty, but with older kids you could incorporate cutting them out into the activity itself. Older kids could look through magazines to find examples of these colours and cut them out.
- Glue.
What to do:
- Present the printable sheets, and introduce the concept of ‘warm’ and ‘cold’ in relation to colours. I did this by linking the colours with objects – “green leaves are cool, the yellow sun is hot”. To make this easier to remember, I put pictures of some of these objects at the top of the sheets.
- Present the coloured paper and glue, and ask your child to match the colours to their appropriate sheet. I helped Arty group the colours by saying things like “green is at home with other cool colours like blue”.
- Get sticky and glue!
As we glued we talked about the colours, how they made us feel, and other objects that might be warm or cool.
By coincidence, Arty was wearing colourful nail polish, so we talked about how they matched while we worked.
